My workshop with Kunio Kobayashi

Fall is right around the corner and the deciduous are starting the change in colour. We have had a really warm autumn so far and right now I´m loooking into which trees need tranplanting in the spring and what pots to get for them. A few trees are going into larger growing boxes and some are going to be transplanted into a growing bed.
As for the workshop with Kobayashi, I`m really happy with the outcome. The material that i brought was a Sabina Juniper purchased for this occasion.

This is actually one of the inclinations I had in mind for the design. But as Kobayashi pointed out, there is a large root running along the soil surface. Not impossible to fix but it requires technique and good aftercare.

This is one of the highlights on the tree, good natural deadwoood that runs from the base to the tip of the foliage. Kobayashi also felt that a cascade would enhance the feel of the tree, and express the hardships of nature.

So a cascade it is!

Tilted on it´s side and a large portion of foliage removed. This is actually the reverse side of the finished tree. As you can see, a few larger branches were removed but there is still enough foliage to sustain the tree.

The finished tree sitting on my bench at home. Kobayashi suggested that I tilt the tree even further to the right and maybe a little bit forward to show of a jin that runs from the back. It needs to be transplanted in the spring and we´ll see what changes I´ll make then.
